Truth in labeling

It’s something most of us learn as children: Not telling the whole truth often amounts to lying. This is a lesson the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is trying to drive home to 17 food manufacturers it contacted last week with a warning that 22 of their products violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act due to misleading labeling. The warning recipients — which include some well-known companies such as Schwan’s and Nestle — were told they had 15 business days to inform the FDA of steps they will take to correct their labeling.

No-fail gardening

This is the year for vegetable gardens, as interest continues to grow in raising our own healthy, fresh food. Vegetable gardening is up 19 percent and seed sales are up 30 percent to 50 percent, according to a Garden Media Group 2010 garden trends report. But unlike previous generations, many of us don’t have hands-on gardening experience from working with our parents on the family plot.

Cady and Courtney McVicker love to text. The twins pick up their phones almost as soon as they hop out of bed in the morning and keep right on texting throughout the day. In fact, Cady texts so much she has the family record — almost 25,000 texts in a single month. If it weren’t for school, work and their mom’s rule about no cell phones at the dinner table, the girls may never put them down.

Texting all expecting moms

Starting out as a new mom can be scary. But for St. Joseph mothers and mothers-to-be, help is now just a text message away.

St. Joseph’s rite of spring

If you live in St. Joseph, you don’t need a groundhog to tell you when spring will be here. That’s because on the first weekend in May, spring comes marching down Frederick Avenue with bands playing and beauty queens waving in the form of the Apple Blossom parade. It’s been an annual tradition in St. Joseph since 1924. And although there have been short periods when the parade didn’t happen, such as during World War II, for the most part, the parade has continued like clockwork.

Band is singing a different tune

In the beginning, playing a Sunday morning worship service didn’t mesh too well with playing Saturday nights at bars. But the piano-playing at Maxwell Heights Presbyterian Church was a job, and Dean Culver somehow managed to do it on only a few hours sleep — not knowing that eventually, praise music would be all he’d want to play.

Sylvia Says: New Spa Cuisine entrées offer taste and fiber boost

Lean Cuisine recently added a little more to chew on to its popular Spa Cuisine entrees. The line has added 5 to 6 grams of dietary fiber per serving, which is 20 percent of the recommended daily amount. If you have never tried a Lean Cuisine meal, they make an extremely convenient, healthy, low-cal lunch or dinner.

March Madhouses

Considering many conference tournaments start today and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off next Thursday, March Madness is in full effect. March Madness is a time when basketball fans and non-basketball fans alike can come together, cheer on small schools that they’ve never heard of before and use their expertise to fill out brackets for a shot at $50 (give or take).

The incredible, economical egg

When Sheri Caldwell cooks meals for her family, her goal is to make something they’ll like to eat. But she also wants to keep costs down and nutrition up. With four children, that’s not easy. Fortunately, as a dietician with Hy-Vee, she has learned some ways to do that. And one is by using the incredible edible egg.

Bettering the burn

When you hear the word “cardio,” what’s the first image that pops into your head? Quick! What do you see? If you’re like most Americans, you might see chaining yourself to a treadmill or elliptical machine, setting it on a particular speed and running until the very sight of the equipment causes your legs to ache. While this does burn calories and helps you lose weight, it isn’t the be-all-end-all of cardio.

Home study

Caden and Dalaney Nigh know the drill. When the nightly news is over, the family shuts off the TV and the kids climb into a favorite chair or sit down at the kitchen table and start tackling their homework.

Spring into green

The calendar says it’s almost time for spring, and if you close your eyes you can almost feel the warmth of the sun and a gentle breeze coming in through the window. Almost. That means it’s time for homeowners to turn their attention to sprucing up the outside of their homes and cleaning the inside.

Weekender: Little Switzerland

Haunted hotels, award-winning architecture, music shows, spas, tree houses and some really big cats — that’s just the start of what you’ll find in Eureka Springs, Ark. It’s a tiny little town hidden away in the Ozarks, but there’s so much to do in the area, it’s worth a trip — several times. “It’s not on the beaten track, so you really have to want to come here,” says Ken Rundel, a publicist. “But once you do, you’ll feel like you’ve been to a magical world in the northwest corner of Arkansas.”

Worth a thousand words

Gone are the days when baby books began with a photo of a newborn. Rather, today’s baby books often begin with an ultrasound photo — and not the grainy, hard-to-decipher kind of decades past. Improved ultrasound technology has rendered images clear enough to see features in detail, and because of this, it’s also had an impact on the hot-button issue of abortion. The abortion worker to make news most recently was Abby Johnson, the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas who quit her job last fall following a procedure with which she assisted.

Sylvia Says: AMP Energy drinks will get your juices flowing

You don’t have to twist my arm to get me to try a product with caffeine. There are days I wonder if I could make it out the door without it. However, I was a little hesitant to try the new AMP Energy Juice. That’s because I don’t really care for the AMP energy drinks.
