Eats: Try taking tea at da Capo

If you happen to be in or around Platte City, Mo., around lunch time, you’ll want to stop at da Capo Teas & Eatery. It’s housed in a 130-plus-year-old storefront on Main Street across from the Platte County courthouse. Locals will remember it formerly as Fanny’s, which was a tradition there for many years. The owners have given it a trendier look, but it still has the old-world charm with lots of dark wood, rich fabrics and a ’50s era soda fountain.

Eats: Bouganvilla Restaurant is a good gamble

Even if you don't gamble, you might want to check out the Bouganvilla Restaurant at Terrible's St. Jo Frontier Casino. For one, the spacious dining area overlooks the Missouri River with little else but nature in view, where you can sit at tables surrounded by a full wall mural of the early frontier and an abundance of flowers and plants in a virtual courtyard setting.

Eats: Get your piece of the pie at Jerry's Again

In Atchison, Kan., Jerry's Again is the place to go for pie. The pies were made famous by the original Jerry's restaurant co-owner, Virginia Kuckelman, who made and still does make all kinds of pies daily, from blackberry to coconut cream. They are sold whole or by the slice and usually sell out by the afternoon. In fact, if you want a whole pie, you had better call ahead.

Eats: A buffet with German flavor

I travel a lot in my sales job, and one thing I usually do not eat at is buffets. But there is one little place here in St. Joseph that has the best homemade food on its buffet and that's the Cabbage Roll.

Eats: Stop in at the Snow Ball

When you're shopping in Atchison, Kan., perhaps searching for ideas at Nell Hills (Mary Carol Garrity's legendary decorating store) consider taking a break at Snow Ball for ice cream, sandwiches and their espresso bar.

Eats: Old-time ambiance

If you want to go to a place that has good deli sandwiches and great live music, then Magoon's is the place to go.

Eats: In Greek or Italian, Lino's means "tasty"

Lino's Original Pizza & Pasta is a restaurant survivor in St. Joseph - standing the test of time and construction at East Hills Mall for 15 years.

Eats: Simple Simon's offers more than pizza

When the weather is nice, there's nothing better than sitting outside on the patio and enjoying a meal with friends. And Simple Simon's Pizza would be just the place to go with its spacious covered brick patio and casual atmosphere.

For burgers, tap into this place

The Tap Room Bar and Grill is one of St. Joe's newest sports bars. It's located on the Belt Highway in what used to be Manchester's Pub and Restaurant. The four owners have pretty much kept the same upscale look that the restaurant had and just removed some seating on one end to add a shuffle board table.

Charlegmagne

If you've ever been to Charlemagne's in Weston, Mo. you know it's also the site of the National Silk Art Museum, a collection of more than 150 rare French silk tapestries belonging to Charlemagne's owner, John Pottie.

Looking for BBQ? Say Goochy Goo

You won't have trouble finding Goochy Goo Barbecue if you follow your nose. Owner Michael Ventucci has his smoker fired up right in front of the restaurant with wafts of barbecue aroma beckoning you inside.

Eats: The heart of Germany in the heart of St. Joseph

Hidden away in a primarily residential area of St. Joseph's midtown, you'll find the Cabbage Roll, now in its 19th year of business. It's a German-themed restaurant decorated with all kinds of German knickknacks and a wall-size mural of a castle in the Rhineland. Owners Larry Matt and Andy Halamar are of German ancestry, and the recipes are authentic, Larry says.

Try it, you'll like it

A trip to the Kirkpatrick Cafe in downtown St. Joseph is worth a visit, if not just for the unique decor. The weathered barn paneling, stained-glass lamps, folk art paintings and unusual wood furniture are one of a kind. But even if you've been there before, you need to return to try the menu. In July of this year, Vincent Daunay became the new owner and Matthew Langford, the manager.

Eats: Sandwich at Marek's is unsinkable

Walt Marek Catering and Deli is well known among local foodies, but easily missed if you are new to town. The family-owned business is hidden away among rows of small homes in on the South Side of St. Joseph off of U.S. Highway 59 (Lake Avenue). You'll find it on Virginia Street in what was originally a neighborhood grocery store. The building dates back to 1919 when it was owned by John and Frances Marek, the grandparents of the current owners, Walt and his sister, Elizabeth. Their parents, Walter and Mary Alice, started the deli in 1982.

Eats: Get your Boogaloo on

You can dance the boogaloo, but in St. Joseph, you'll want to eat there. Boogaloo's Bar-B-Que is the real deal when it comes to tender slabs of babyback ribs, barbecued brisket and piled-high shredded pork sandwiches. Owner Wilbur May makes everything fresh at the restaurant, including a slightly spicy barbecue sauce. He also serves Kansas City Masterpiece on the side for those who like it sweet. But you really don't need any sauce on the baby back ribs, thanks to Wibur's special (and top secret) rub.
